Fictional entertainment and pop culture are my life, but I’ve never been more appreciative of them than I was throughout the unprecedented year that was 2020. When there was so much uncertainty and fear with the spread of the Coronavirus that completely changed every day life as we know it, escapism entertainment was a perfect way to unplug and find a little enjoyment. Given how many industries were shut down because of the pandemic, I’m just thankful we got as many releases and events as we did! I’ve done this end of year list naming my favorite movie, television show, video game, comic, novel, and sporting event several times now, but I think this one might go down as the most special to me, as all of these picks went a long way to keeping me positive throughout 2020.

FAVORITE MOVIE – 1917

Technically this was a very late 2019 film that I only saw in January, but even if my options hadn’t been as severely limited this year as they were, I think I’d still pick 1917. It’s a visceral masterpiece that may just be the most thrilling movie theater experience I’ve ever had in my life.

FAVORITE TV SHOW – STARGIRL

What an incredibly fun and heartwarming series this turned out to be. A super likable cast of characters, amazing production values for a tv show, and just charm on top of charm that’s made me eager for a second season.

FAVORITE VIDEO GAME – ANIMAL CROSSING: NEW HORIZONS

This was actually the first Animal Crossing game that I really dove into, and it’s made me a fan of the series for life. While 2020 persisted to be one giant debacle, there was nothing more relaxing than sitting down and enjoying the town I built on my deserted island in New Horizons.

FAVORITE COMIC BOOK – JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK (VOLUME 2)

I’ve always liked the magical/horror side of DC’s superheroes, and adding arguably my favorite superhero (Wonder Woman) to the team was a recipe for success with me. The latest Justice League Dark series has been perfectly action-packed, hilarious, and creepy all at the same time.

FAVORITE NOVEL – THE LAST WISH (THE WITCHER SERIES)

Been meaning to read The Witcher books for a long time, and I’m glad I finally started them this year. They sure get off to a great start with The Last Wish anthology, which has some of the best fantasy short stories I’ve ever come across.

FAVORITE SPORTING EVENT – THE BUFFALO BILLS TAKE DOWN THE PITTSBURGH STEELERS

It’s been an amazing year to be a Buffalo Bills fan, but this was perhaps their biggest win in a phenomenal season. Sunday Night Football, the whole country watching, and we get a statement win over the powerhouse Pittsburgh Steelers.
